This traditional Hebrew adage is especially relevant in a northern English city during contemporary threats.

For Walters, the witty quip captures the unyielding character that defines his observant Jewish neighbourhood.

This vibrant area was identified by an Islamic State sleeper cell, whose scheme to “kill as many Jews as possible” in a rampaging gun incident was foiled. Two suspects were sentenced this week on terrorism offences.

Community Solidarity and Daily Struggles

According to Walters, the disrupted scheme has not weakened the neighbourhood’s commitment to get on with its neighbours. “My business partner is a religious Muslim and we get on great,” said the financial advisor. “There’s good and bad in any group. Most just want to live in tranquility.”

The extremists viewed the Jewish community solely through the distorted perspective of hatred.

They showed no curiosity in the diverse lifestyles, incomes, levels of observance and opinions within Greater Manchester’s Jewish communities, nor in the pressing social concerns like poverty that impact many UK areas.

Michelle Ciffer Klein runs a family support centre that supports hundreds of families, including large ultra-Orthodox families and some Muslim women. The hub provides mother and baby groups, clinics, advice services, learning programs, and vital financial and material support.

“Outsiders think the biggest issue is safety – that is not true,” Ciffer Klein said. “Naturally we’re sad and we pray, but the women I work with are finding it hard to manage with daily routines, stress and many children. We are here to help.”

“The cost of living – kosher food is very expensive – energy bills, families who can’t afford milk and nappies, housing, welfare issues – these are what I’m dealing with.”

Heightened Vigilance and Unbroken Spirit

Despite these pressures, two common themes have grown under pressure. One is a marked shift “in favour of community solidarity and engagement,” according to a major community study organisation. The other is a culture of watchfulness on a scale rare in most UK suburbs.

“In the UK, there was a kind of view there was a period of safety in terms of post-war understanding of what anti-Jewish hatred is,” said a director for a civic body. “It is my belief that outlook is starting to be seen as overly naive.”

They continued, “It’s not that we think this time is any more dangerous than any of those times before, but that there’s no assumption that dangerous times won’t return.”

There is recognition of the endeavours being done within Muslim communities to challenge radical narratives, though moderate voices can feel drowned out.

Appeals have been made for the government to introduce a new radicalism strategy, with an focus on tackling the doctrinal challenge posed by extremism, separate from religion or people.

Resilience and Hope

However, amid the backdrop of safety concerns, a note of joyful defiance characterises even sombre gatherings.
