The Red Devils Poised to Sign German Striker Lea Schüller from the Bavarian Giants
The Women's Super League club are on the verge of sealing the deal for prolific Germany striker Lea Schüller on a permanent transfer away from Bayern Munich.
A Major Acquisition for United
Schüller, who has half a year left on her deal, is known as a consistent goal-getter for both club and country. She has netted over 100 goals for Bayern and scored 54 times in 82 appearances for Germany. This signing will be seen as a marquee coup for the WSL team.
Her exit from Bayern was expected after she was seen holding back emotions while thanking the club's fans following a victory over Bayer Leverkusen recently.
It was reported in late December that the German women's top flight was set to lose one of its leading forwards. Per reports, all the paperwork for the transfer are now finalised.
Consistent Goalscoring to Strengthen United's Forward Line
The 28-year-old’s signing should represent a significant boost to United’s forward line. She has been highly consistent in front of goal in Germany’s top flight.
- For seven consecutive seasons, up to and including the last term, she achieved at least a double-figures tally of league goals.
- She claimed the top scorer award in the 2021-22 season with 16 goals.
Building Momentum at Old Trafford
The acquisition of the German international comes at a time when the club seem to be building momentum.
Recent on-pitch successes feature qualifying for the Champions League knockout phase playoffs as a seeded team and a victory in the Conti Cup quarter-finals.
In the transfer market, the winter break has brought further activity:
- The acquisition of Swedish right-back Hanna Lundkvist on a three-and-a-half-year deal.
- The new deal for Japanese midfielder Hinata Miyazawa, who has become fan favourite since arriving in 2023.
On Miyazawa’s new deal, a senior figure commented: “Miyazawa is now a vital part to the way we play. Her understanding of the game and skill enables her and the team to dominate play from the middle of the park.”
Lundkvist, who has joined from a club in the American league, added: “You can feel how much the club have progressed in the last few years, competing in one of the strongest leagues in the world and performing in the top European competition.”
