The Porcine Pardon: Pig Named Six Seven Granted Clemency by Miami Dade County Mayor.
While perhaps not at the same level as sparing Thanksgiving turkeys, but the mayor of Miami-Dade conducted a presidential-style act this week by ceremoniously saving the life of a pig named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava performed the seasonal stunt at the Cuban-themed Latin Cafe 2000 in the heart of Miami’s Little Havana neighborhood.
“The swine has done no wrong. She is worthy of this pardon. Her criminal record is spotless,” stated the mayor in a speech with clear references to the vast quantity of pardons issued since the onset of a second term in office.
“Unless you count eating 6 or 7 apples per day,” Levine Cava continued. “Let this swine have a long and happy life without fear.”
The gathering, which both honors and questions the area's customary feast of feasting on pork during the holidays, was founded to mirror the yearly bird sparing at the White House.
The pig, contributed by a Coral Gables firefighter, was named for the current slang trend of young people yelling “6-7” – deriving from a hip-hop line – often without clear purpose. The phrase became so widespread that a major dictionary recently declared “six-seven” its top term for the year.
A New Life
Six Seven the pig is now set to enjoy its days at a rural sanctuary “far from charcoal and roasting pans”, according to the ceremony's official statement.
“The annual pig pardon has become a beloved tradition to open the end-of-year celebrations,” said the cafe owner, in a notably cheerful message.
“It represents the spirit of Miami: vibrant, multicultural, and rooted in traditions that bring people together. Every time, we are proud to celebrate culture and compassion in a way unique to Miami.”
Attendees enjoyed a meat-free selection of croquettes and Cuban coffee as they marked Six Seven’s big moment.
