The people of Israel observe two-year remembrance of October 7th attacks as Palestinian peace talks advance
People have come together across the country to mark the second anniversary since the Hamas-led attack on October 7th, 2023, as talks continued in the neighboring country over a resolution to the war in Gaza.
The attack led to more than 1,200 people dead and 251 others captured away to Gaza as prisoners. It was the most deadliest day for Jewish people since the Second World War.
Israel responded by launching a military offensive in Gaza which has taken in excess of 67,000 people, as reported by the region's Hamas-administered health ministry. Its numbers are regarded as reliable by the United Nations and other world agencies.
"Our bloodthirsty enemies have hit us hard, but they have not defeated us," Benjamin Netanyahu remarked on Tuesday.
He also pledged to "realize all the goals of the war: the return of all the captured, the elimination of the Hamas government and the guarantee that Gaza will not pose a threat to Israel".
Remembrance Events Across Israel
The national leadership rescheduled official memorials until mid-October - after the conclusion of the festive season - but ceremonies still were held around the country on that day.
A memorial ceremony for the relatives of Israeli citizens killed in the Hamas attack was organized in the coastal city. Arranged by the affected families, it was televised on Israeli TV networks.
Hours earlier, a silent tribute was respected throughout the country.
Peace Talks in Egypt
At the same time, both sides' negotiating teams convened in the Egyptian tourist destination of the Egyptian city for a follow-up session of third-party negotiations to discuss the terms of the plan.
A prominent delegate knowledgeable about the discussions indicated that an night meeting of negotiations commenced at 19:00 Cairo time.
The source said the earlier meeting finished without significant progress, amid disagreements over the recommended Israeli retreat arrangements from Gaza and over safeguards Hamas demands to make certain Israel does not recommence combat after the opening period of the agreement.
He added that the negotiations are "difficult and have still not achieve any significant progress," but noted that facilitators are making efforts to close the gaps between the both parties.
Key Points in Negotiations
- An enduring truce
- The swap of the hostages still held by Hamas for inmates from Gaza
- The withdrawal of military personnel from Gaza
- Arrangements for humanitarian aid deliveries
- After-conflict management of the territory
Public Feeling
In Tel Aviv's Hostages Square earlier, young Hagar - whose family member endured the attack on the gathering, where many attendees were killed and dozens more were captured by Hamas militants - explained: "No place seems like home anymore and until each abducted person come back not a single person will have peace of mind."
"When we see everybody home returned, we can relax once more. Then we can start to heal," she continued.
In front of the leader's official dwelling in the capital, people congregated to show their solidarity for the families of the captives. Israel says forty-eight remain in confinement in Gaza, 20 of whom are thought to be surviving.
Demonstrator Atalia Regev remarked: "It's necessary do whatever arrangement required for the hostages to return. But we sincerely need guarantees that we will be safe."
Surveys now consistently show that approximately 70% of Israeli citizens want the hostilities to conclude in exchange for the liberation of the hostages.
Palestinian Conditions
At the site of Nova festival, mourners came together to pay their respects.
From the site, the noise of Israeli air strikes and shelling could be noticed just a few kilometres away in Gaza, where witnesses indicated the heavy Israeli attacks persisted.
In Gaza City, air and artillery strikes were reported in the dawn of Tuesday in the western district, area and locality districts and in the east side district of the community, as well the settlement to the northwest.
"Once the evening arrives, the fear comes with it," displaced Gaza City resident a local woman, whose young son was killed by an Israeli bombing earlier, explained.
"Me and my three children are fearful of the bombings. Throughout the evening we are lying together, embracing, notably my little child who rests his head on me all night."
"Continuously we look at the reports to see developments. And I'm afraid that this halt will not be finalized and that the war will return to us."
Medical Crisis
The medical facility in the urban area reported it had taken in the bodies of several people by the daytime, including several who lost their lives in an Israeli attack in the south part area.
Another medical facility in the southern urban center of Khan Younis reported another two victims had been transported. An individual was lost his life by Israeli soldiers while seeking aid to the southern area, medical staff reported.
