New York Unveils Portal for Public to Share Immigration Images Following Arrests of Four US Citizens
The state AG has introduced a recent online portal asking citizens to share photos and videos of federal immigration enforcement across New York. This action comes just a day after a significant immigration operation shook Manhattan's Chinatown, triggering widespread demonstrations.
US Citizens Held In Enforcement Action
A congressional representative revealed during a news conference that four citizens were taken into custody and held for "almost a full day" following the previous day's operation. Protests occurred in New York on Tuesday and Wednesday nights.
"Each citizen deserves to reside free from terror," the attorney general wrote in a statement.
"For those who saw and recorded immigration enforcement recently, I encourage you to submit that material with my office. We are dedicated to examining these submissions and evaluating any wrongdoings."
Portal Features
The portal provides spaces to send photos and videos of the operation, as well as a area to specify location information. Prior to sending, individuals must tick a checkbox that acknowledges that "the attorney general may use any documents, photographs, or videos in a official report, including in a court case or official statement."
Information about the ICE Action
The Chinatown raid, which witnesses say included over fifty federal agents, occurred in a well-known neighborhood of the city where fake handbags, accessories, jewelry and other goods are commonly traded en masse – often to visitors.
Footage of the incident reveal multiple hooded and equipped federal agents restraining and arresting a individual, and pushing back onlookers. Crowds of New Yorkers trailed the personnel along the roads. An armored truck was also seen moving along the urban roads.
Political Response
At a news conference featuring the New York immigrant rights coalition, congressman Dan Goldman, a Democrat, said that four US citizens were arrested by immigration for about 24 hours and that there were "no circumstances where nationals should be arrested for without cause." He clarified the individuals were let go on Wednesday with no legal action taken.
"The intent is obvious here. It is not about removing offenders," Goldman stated. "This is a armed campaign to incite tension. It is simply a pretext to provoke conflict for federal officials to utilize the military to stop unrest that they initiated."
Extensive Outcry
Anger over the federal action escalated – all three political contenders denounced the incident, including Governor Kathy Hochul.
"Yet again, the federal government chooses authoritarian theatrics that generate terror, not safety. It has to end," a political candidate declared.
The city's community groups expressed outrage as well.
"ICE raided Manhattan's Chinatown with tactical trucks, hooded officers and riot gear to focus on local sellers trying to make a living. This raid had no relation to citizen protection and everything to do with terrorizing immigrant families and communities," remarked the leader of a rights organization.
Agency Rules
ICE policy prohibits the holding of citizens and the organization has stated it will not apprehend US citizens. Yet, independent reporting has discovered that more than 170 American nationals have been taken illegally by ICE during the period of the current administration.
Ongoing Trend
ICE raids have been becoming more common in NY and around the country lately.
A mid-October raid in midtown Manhattan was the earliest reported action on an refuge facility of the present government. Demonstrations targeting ICE are widespread including allegations of violence and inhumane treatment.
Most recently, a submission submitted by civil rights groups alleged inadequate care of women with child in detention centers.
