Nazi Munitions, Torpedoes and Naval Mines: The Way Marine Life Thrives on Discarded Weapons
In the brackish waters off the Germany's coast lies a graveyard of Nazi bombs, torpedoes and mines. Dumped from barges at the end of the World War II and left behind, thousands weapons have become matted together over the decades. They comprise a decaying carpet on the shallow, muddy seafloor of the Lübeck Bay in the western part of the Baltic.
Over the decades, the Nazi arsenal was ignored and neglected. A increasing amount of tourists flocked to the sandy beaches and calm waters for water sports, kite surfing and amusement parks. Underwater, the munitions deteriorated.
Some of us thought to see a lifeless zone, with nothing living there because it was all poisoned, says the lead researcher.
When the team went investigating to see what they were affecting to the marine environment, some of us expected to see a desert, with nothing living there because it was all contaminated, states a scientist.
What they observed surprised them. Vedenin recounts his scientists shouting with surprise when the ROV first relayed pictures. That moment was a great moment, he notes.
Countless of ocean life had made their homes among the weapons, forming a regenerated habitat denser than the ocean bottom around it.
This marine city was proof to the resilience of life. Truly surprising how much marine organisms we discover in areas that are expected to be hazardous and harmful, he says.
More than 40 sea stars had gathered on to one visible piece of explosive material. They were living on steel casings, ignition chambers and transport cases just a short distance from its volatile core. Fish, crabs, anemones and bivalves were all observed on the old munitions. It's similar to a reef ecosystem in terms of the quantity of creatures that was there, says Vedenin.
Unexpected Population Density
An mean of more than 40,000 animals were residing on every meter squared of the weapons, experts documented in their paper on the observation. The nearby seabed was much sparser, with only 8,000 creatures on every meter squared.
It is paradoxical that things that are designed to destroy all life are drawing so much life, states Vedenin. You can see how nature adapts after a major disaster such as the World War II and how, in certain respects, marine life establishes itself to the most risky places.
Artificial Features as Marine Habitats
Artificial constructions such as sunken vessels, wind turbines, oil rigs and undersea pipes can create substitutes, compensating for some of the destroyed marine environment. This investigation demonstrates that explosives could be equally positive – the bloom of marine organisms on those in the Bay of Lübeck is probable to be duplicated in other locations.
Between 1946 and 1948, 1.6 million tonnes of arms were dumped off the German shoreline. Countless of people transported them in boats; some were deposited in designated locations, others just dumped en route. This is the first time researchers have documented how ocean organisms has adapted.

Coming Issues
Anywhere warfare has happened in the last century, nearby oceans are typically littered with weapons, states Vedenin. Many millions of tonnes of explosive material lie in our seas.
The sites of these munitions are inadequately documented, in part because of national borders, restricted defense data and the situation that documents are stored in historical records. They present an detonation and security hazard, as well as risk from the ongoing emission of poisonous compounds.
