England to Start the European Championship 2028 Quest at the Etihad Stadium
England’s men’s team will embark on their 2028 European Championship journey at the Manchester City’s stadium, provided that they secure the relatively straightforward qualification for a competition hosted across most of the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland.
City’s stadium has not hosted an English men’s fixture since eight years ago, when the visitors were defeated 2-1 in a friendly, but is almost certain to welcome the national team for their first match on June 10, 2028.
The English side are set to play their concluding group fixtures at Wembley Stadium, but, in the event of winning the preliminary round, their round of 16 match would be held at the Newcastle stadium. Placing second would mean beginning the knockouts at Everton’s ground.
Tournament Opening and Demonstration
The championship was inaugurated at an ceremony in a London landmark on Wednesday night. High-ranking officials from European football’s governing body and the host football associations were confronted as they arrived the venue by around fifty pro-Palestine demonstrators, who urged the Israeli team to be expelled from global football because of the conflict in Gaza.
Placards were held up with slogans saying “Show Israel the red card” and “You are complicit”, while demonstrators shouted: “Kick Israel out.”
Tournament Schedule
The inaugural fixture of the European Championship will be held at the Cardiff’s stadium in Cardiff, on a Friday in June 2028, a fixture that will include the Dragons if they qualify.
The national stadium will host both semi-finals and the title decider, which will be played on a Sunday in July 2028 with a commencement at 5:00 PM.
It is anticipated that an earlier start, which will also be implemented for UEFA Champions League finals from next season, will appeal to households and help reach a more diverse set of audiences.
Host Nations
The Irish team are set to play their first game at the Dublin stadium and the Tartan Army would do the same at Glasgow’s Hampden Park.
The national sides of all four hosts will take part in the qualification process; two reserved places will be reserved for any that fail to qualify for the finals through the qualification path.
Stadiums and Knockout Stage
The Birmingham venue and Spurs’ ground complete the event’s nine venues. Each one will hold at least one elimination game, with the last eight staged at each country’s national stadium.
The draw for the qualifiers will be conducted in the Northern Irish capital, which was removed as a host city last year when it emerged Casement Park could not be renovated in time, on December 6, 2026.
Leadership Comment
“It will be a tournament for the fans and a celebration of everything we love about the game – its emotion and ability to foster unity.”
Over 3 million admissions, a unprecedented number for a men’s European Championship, are projected to be offered to supporters.
